Final Friday Farmers Market
Nelsonville has its very own Farmers Market, starting Friday May 27th. In collaboration with the popular Final Fridays event on the Historic Square in downtown Nelsonville, local farmers will join the fray from 5pm-8pm every Final Friday from May through October.
The interest in having a farmers market in Nelsonville was spurred forward by a recent community assessment by Ruth Dudding of the Athens City-County Health Department. Nelsonville residents identified a lack of options and lack of access to healthy food. Community members, Rocky Boots, Rural Action, ACENet, Main Street Association and Final Fridays leaders collaborated to build a new farmers market to fill the void. Starting May 27th, Nelsonville residents can enjoy produce and goods from Vest Berries Farm, Shade River Organic Farm, Shagbark Seed & Mill and others. The market will boast a cornucopia of seasonal fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, eggs, herbs, and baked goods.
Margaret Gustafan and Chad Ferguson, the Nelsonville Farmers Market Co-Managers, will be on-site for each market. Chad is an organic gardener who believes that local agriculture is key to improving human health and environmental stewardship. His interests include self-reliance through home food production, wild harvest, and traditional food preservation. Margaret brings her experience as a vendor at the Athens Farmer's Market to Nelsonville. She is a soap maker, potter, and artist, and she grows and sells her products as the proprietor of Potter Ridge Herb Farm and, formerly, Lavender Drawers. She also consigns at Nelsonville Pottery and Gifts. Margaret believes in the strength of community, and she lives the importance of locally grown and locally made.
The goal is to promote healthy food options as well as supporting local agricultural entrepreneurs and hobby gardeners alike. Having the market during Final Fridays lends a festive atmosphere as well as a consistent customer base. This years Final Fridays & Nelsonville Farmers Markets are not to be missed!
To get to the Historic Square Arts District, turn onto Hocking Street from Rt. 33 in Nelsonville

Hello Cats & Kitties!
The Cat's Pajamas Clothing Exchange is back for it's third year to bring you a whole new wardrobe of clothes. Last year we basically filled the entire basement of ARTS/West with items, and we hope to be full to bursting again this time.
The preview party featuring DJ Barticus and FREE AVALANCHE PIZZA will occur on Friday, April 29th from 7pm-10pm. The preview party will allow you to have first access to all... of the early donations of clothing we will be receiving. The regular exchange hours are Saturday, April 30th & Sunday, May 1st from 1-6pm.
The way the exchange works is:
• Bring any unwanted clothing items to ARTS/West (132 W. State) before the first day of the event & you will be able to take as many items as you like throughout the entire event!
• If you bring clothes with you during any scheduled event hours, you can take as many items as you bought, each additional items costs $1. • Customers pay $5 entry during the event weekend. Once customers have paid entry they can come back as many times as they like. (you only pay entry once)
• Proceeds benefit ARTS/West: Athens Community Gateway to the Arts. *We will be seeking volunteer clothing sorters the week of the event, and during the event hours. All volunteers get free entry all weekend, unlimited clothing items, and have first dibs on any items they like while they sort.

In the Presence of an Absence is a nonlinear performance project by Sarah Stevens, consisting of short performance pieces. This project is a part of the ARTS/West Presents Series and will be free, donations will be gladly accepted. Front and Center 5/14/11, 12:00pm
A free music event for school age kids 2nd Saturday of each month (Sept.-May) at noon -1 pm. First Half is a special guest, second half of event is always an open stage for any kids, solo or group, to share instrumental or vocal music--if you choose. Or just listen and enjoy!

Please Help!
A.L.P.A.C.A. has the opportunity to provide a fun community service for Athens area young families. On Saturday, May 7, 2011, we have agreed to run a kids arts table at the Birth Circle Pregnancy and Baby Fair. It will be held at the Market on State from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. We plan to help kids make Mother's Day cards. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to the community that helps keep us doing what we do! It is a short day - only 5 hours and you can volunteer for whatever amount of time you have available. ALPACA will provide the craft supplies. We just need the volunteers to work with the kids.
Please seriously consider helping out for whatever amount of time you have available on that Saturday! This is an easy and fun way to give back!
Please email me if you can help!
Many thanks,
Kirsten Trachsel
Vice-President - ALPACA
